Sue Baxter (Artistic Director)

Trained at Central School of Speech and Drama; has been directing since 1973. Currently Head of Drama at St Gabriel’s, Newbury.

Recent productions include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice, The Comedy of Errors, and The Tempest for the BBC Shakespeare Festival, Theatre Royal, Winchester; and The Crucible at the Oxford Playhouse.

Previous collaborations with Alexander Rogers include: The Mysteries (2004), Abigail’s Party (2005), Blithe Spirit, The Taming of the Shrew, and Forever England (one-man show; all 2006), Romeo and Juliet and The Dresser (2007), The Philanthropist (2008), and The Crucible (2009).

Other productions include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Beggar’s Opera, Kindertransport, Peter Pan, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Tom Jones, The House of Bernarda Alba, Guys and Dolls, The Birds, O What a Lovely War!, The Merchant of Venice, and The Comedy of Errors.

Acting roles include: Irene in The Dresser, Petra in Enemy of the People, Lulu in The Birthday Party, Alais in The Lion in Winter, MC/Lady Haig in Oh What a Lovely War!, Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Trincula in The Tempest (twice), Gentlewoman in Macbeth, Mrs Bradman in Blithe Spirit, Chorus in Oedipus, Ludovica in Caucasian Chalk Circle, Siri in Lunatic and Lover, Bridget Allworthy in Tom Jones, Alison in Look Back in Anger, and Pearl in Roots.

Sue’s half-hour adaptation of The Comedy of Errors has been commissioned by the Shakespeare Schools Festival, and will soon be available alongside, among others, Tom Stoppard’s 30-minutes cut of The Merchant of Venice.
